Guidelines for attending touch based events
Following are two sets of guidelines, the first discusses Thai massage spaces, the second Contact Improvisation spaces.
Whilst the physical form, mechanics and roles differ between these two, the essential intentions are the same - to create spaces that are welcoming for everyone, support and promote awareness of self and other, have clear intentions, promote communication and active consent.
Thai massage guidelines:
By attending any Thai massage events run by Moving Stillness, you agree to abide by the following guidelines:
What Thai Massage Is, and Is Not:
Thai massage is an invitation to practice a moving meditation where we learn to cultivate a spacious awareness and an inner stillness, and to offer this to each other through our presence and our touch. From this space, we neither impose anything on another nor take anything from them. By intentionally learning to hold space and share touch in this way, we slowly develop the spacious, open, and clear presence that, in my opinion, represents the highest skill in any art of touch.
The very most basic aspect of developing the above clarity of presence is the awareness and control of our sexual energies. Sexuality is, of course, a natural part of who we are as humans, but Thai massage as a practice is not the place for any form of sexual expression or exploration.
Guidelines for Thai massage:
- By attending, you agree to approach Thai massage as a meditative, non-sexual practice centered on mutual respect, active listening, and cultivating the qualities mentioned above.
- Please set the intention in advance to transform any sexual energy that may arise within you (without self-judgment) so that you avoid expressing it in any way, whether subtle or overt, in our spaces. In this way, we take care of each other and honor the clarity of practice. If you notice that your actions are causing sexual energy to arise in someone else, adjust or stop what you are doing. You can always ask the teacher or assistants for advice.
- State your boundaries and needs. If, for example, there is some part of your body (beyond the obvious) that you don't wish to be worked with or touched, for whatever reason, please communicate this. You should feel supported in the space to speak your needs at any time. Cultivating awareness and clarity of presence involves listening to your own needs, identifying boundaries, and communicating them. By working through internal barriers, we can become more effective communicators.
- Be open and receptive to others expressing their boundaries or needs, whether in shared space or in response to your actions. Some people may find it difficult to recognize or articulate their needs. Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues, such as hesitation, body language, or tone of voice.
Reporting and Feedback:
If your boundaries are crossed during an event and you feel unable to resolve it directly in the space, please speak with Justin or an assistant during the event, or feel free to contact Justin afterwards.
By following these guidelines, we can create an intentional space that is safe, respectful, and relaxed for sharing the practice of giving and receiving Thai massage.

Contact Improvisation guidelines:
By attending any Contact Improvisation events run by Moving Stillness, you agree to abide by the following guidelines:
What Contact Improvisation Is and Is Not
Contact Improvisation is a shared space of exploration of the experience of moving in free-form improvised contact with others. Being humans, our sexual chemistry will awaken within individuals and between people naturally from time to time. And without painting this as somehow bad or wrong per se, it must be emphasized that CI spaces are not the appropriate space for expressing or exploring sexual energy generally, or towards others, even if it is reciprocated.
Guidelines:
- Consent and Respect: Everyone is free to join, pause, or leave a dance at any moment without explanation or judgment. Prioritize mutual comfort and active consent.
- Freedom of Movement: Honor each participant's ability to enter or leave dances freely. Avoid restricting movement, and cultivate a receptive, listening touch that supports exploration.
- Non-Verbal Communication: Develop awareness of energy shifts, comfort levels, and unspoken intentions. Listen with your body and be attentive to both verbal and non-verbal cues.
- Inclusive Practice: Welcome dancers of all skill levels. For newcomers: take your time, observe, and participate at your comfort level. For experienced dancers: offer patience, guidance, and remain open to learning.
- Shared Responsibility: Maintain awareness of your body, energy, and the shared space. Gradually build trust, support partners with care, and prioritize safety in weight-sharing and physical interactions.
Reporting and Feedback:
If your boundaries are crossed during an event and you feel unable to resolve it directly in the space, please speak with Justin or an assistant during the event, or feel free to contact Justin afterwards.
By following these guidelines, we can create a clear space dedicated to sharing CI practice together in a safe and respectful way.
